UWC campus Tour
As part of the pre-conference programme, delegates are invited to participate in a guided campus tour of the University of the Western Cape (UWC), followed by an enriching visit to the Mayibuye Archives Museum, located on the UWC campus.
Founded in 1960, UWC has a rich history rooted in South Africa’s struggle for freedom and social justice. Originally established by the apartheid government for so-called “Coloured” students, the university evolved into a critical intellectual hub for anti-apartheid resistance. Today, UWC stands as a leading institution committed to academic excellence, transformation and social justice.
The tour will culminate in a visit to the Mayibuye Archives in collaboration with the Robben Island Museum, home to one of the largest collections of materials related to the liberation struggle in South Africa. The museum preserves and showcases historical, wide-ranging artefacts and personal archives of key figures in the anti-apartheid movement. The tour will also showcase unique spaces to UWC, informing our identity rooted in a commitment to justice and equality.
This visit promises to highlight UWC’s contribution to education and liberation and offer a powerful space for reflection and inspiration through history and heritage, leaving one to ponder how a rich history can shape minds to solve contemporary challenges.
