George Barrett is the Country Director of the British Council in South Africa, leading the UK’s cultural relations team in country since December 2022. With a proven track record in international development and education, George brings a unique blend of expertise to her role.

George Barrett
Prior to joining the British Council, George headed the UK’s trade development portfolio for the Southern African Customs Union and Mozambique at the British High Commission. Her experience in South Africa spans over 14 years, including her time as a lecturer of International and Political Studies at Rhodes University, where she taught a range of subjects including environmental politics and ethics, liberation ecologies, and African political theory.
George’s academic expertise and teaching experience have equipped her with a deep understanding of the complex interplay between politics, economy, and society, particularly in the African context.
George’s career in international development began at the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) and the Africa Educational Trust, where she focused on communications, knowledge management, and literacy programmes. She also worked at the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD), collaborating with civil society and political parties to strengthen democratic practices across Africa.
A passionate advocate for youth and female empowerment, George believes in the transformative power of education and skills opportunities to drive positive, inclusive, and sustainable societal change. She is committed to promoting greater cultural understanding and respect between communities through education, arts, and language.
In her current role, George leverages her expertise to foster cultural exchange, education, and collaboration between the UK and South Africa, driving meaningful impact and partnerships that benefit the people of both countries.
