Phethiwe Matutu

Dr Phethiwe Matutu is USAf’s new Chief Executive Officer, effective from 1 October 2022.

For the immediate past five years, she was the Group Executive: Strategy, Planning and Partnerships at the National Research Foundation (NRF), where she was responsible for long- term strategy. Prior to her tenure at the NRF, Dr Matutu had been a Chief Director: Human Capital and Science Promotion in the former Department of Science and Technology (DST).

A mathematician by discipline, Dr Matutu’s career was launched in academia, where for 16 years she focused her teaching on making Mathematics accessible, particularly to the previously marginalised groups. Her teaching career culminated in a senior lectureship in Rhodes University’s Department of Mathematics in 2004, a position she held until 2008.

In policy-making circles, Dr Matutu served in various committees and structures including the Ministerial Task Team for the Drafting of the Implementation Plan for the White Paper on Post-School Education and Training in the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET).
